The Pinkston’s Turf Services Story

The year was 1957. Jack Paar was named as the new host of "The Tonight Show" replacing the popular Steve Allen; the newest show on television was a western called "Have Gun – Will Travel" starring Richard Boone; the dawn of the space age immerged on an early October day, when Russia’s first space satellite Sputnik I was launched causing the United States of America to begin developing its own space program; and Pinkston’s Termite & Pest Control was established in Tulsa, Oklahoma, providing premium quality services to the citizens of metropolitan Tulsa! It was a time of high expectations and challenges to the people of this great land to see the expression of the American dream come true!

In the small town of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a pioneer in the pest control and lawn care industry was setting his feet to a path that would change him and his family’s future. Ted Pinkston, a retired state agriculture agent, began Pinkston’s Termite & Pest Control Company. Pinkston’s provided a vast variety of services, including; termite control, inside & outside pest control, tree & shrub spraying, and weed control programs for Tulsa’s lawns. Long before the likes of such companies as Chemlawn, Pinkston’s was providing quality lawn care service to their customers. Today, we still offer most of these services except, termite and inside pest control.

In the early days of Pinkston’s, a signature trademark of Pinkston’s lawn service was its pink weed control applications. These applications were applied during the fall & spring months with a red dye included in the formulation that caused the yards to have a Pink Appearance. It was quite a status symbol in those days to have a Pinkston’s Pink yard! In the early 1980’s that trademark application was changed to a more conventional application without the dye, but the Pinkston’s professionalism in the chemical lawn care industry continued to shine through!

Other transformations for Pinkston’s Termite & Pest Control occurred along the way! In 1972 Ted transferred the business to his son, Bill Pinkston’s. Bill had a similar service company already established in the Oklahoma City area. In 1977 Bill was introduced to Ron Blythe, a young entrepreneur with a Master’s Degree from Oklahoma State University in Entomology. Ron’s dream was to own his own service related company and to build a business based on principles of honesty, trustworthiness and integrity. These were principles taught to him by his father, a successful small business owner in Nowata, OK. Bill and Ron soon became partners in Pinkston’s Termite & Pest Control and not to long after that, Ron Blythe purchased the company outright from the Pinkston family. The name of the company has been modified twice since then, from Pinkston’s Termite & Pest Control to Pinkston’s Weed & Pest Control and lastly, to its current name Pinkston’s Turf Services. Although Ron is not a Pinkston family member, his belief in the Pinkston’s tradition of excellence compelled him to maintain the Pinkston’s name, a standard bearer of premier lawn care service in the Tulsa Metropolitan area.
